Sclerotherapy: How It Treats Varicose and Spider Veins

varicose veins

Varicose and spider veins are common among adults. Besides its unpleasant appearance, some may experience some pain and side effects as well.

Varicose veins can cause itching, cramping, pain, and discoloration, while spider veins are similar but much smaller and less severe. Because of this, people are looking for ways to reduce discomfort and their unsightly appearance through therapy.

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that addresses varicose and spider veins. During the treatment, therapists inject chemicals straight into the damaged veins. Besides getting a massage facial to give your body that extra TLC it needs, consider getting sclerotherapy to address your varicose and spider vein issues.

How Does Sclerotherapy Work?

Sclerotherapy treatment will be different for various people, depending on the severity of your condition. But the average time of treatment is from 15 minutes to about an hour. Additionally, your doctor may need to conduct an ultrasound before the treatment to see the extent of your condition.

When the doctor is ready to begin treatment, he’ll start by cleaning the skin around the targeted area. After which, a fine needle will be inserted, injecting the sclerosing agent, such as polidocanol, sodium tetradecyl sulfate, or hypertonic saline solution, into the damaged vein.

The agent will cause the walls of the injected vein to close up, so your blood will be redirected to unaffected veins. Over time, your body will absorb the damaged veins, reducing discomfort and making them less visible.

How Do I Prepare for Treatment?

Before getting sclerotherapy treatment, like facial massage treatments, a consultation with your doctor is advised. This is because you want to ensure the treatment is best for your condition.

Once the doctor gives you the goal signal, you’ll need to avoid certain medications like ibuprofen and aspirin a few days before the treatment. This is because these are blood thinners and may cause bruising in the area.

Another thing you should remember is to avoid applying any product and shaving the area because sclerotherapy may cause some mild irritation. But to help protect the area after the treatment, you should wear a compression stocking for a few days while you recover.

What Can I Expect?

If you’re worried about recovery time for sclerotherapy, you’d be happy to know that there’s little to no downtime associated with this treatment. After the procedure, you can go back to your everyday activities immediately.

However, in the first 24 hours after your sclerotherapy treatment, your doctor may ask you to wear compression socks or stockings. If you’re feeling a bit of pain, acetaminophen-based pain medications can manage discomfort.

Some other factors you should avoid are long exposure to sunlight, saunas, hot baths, pools, and beaches during the first two days after your treatment. Besides that, avoid aerobic exercises, like weight lifting or running.

The Bottom Line: Say Goodbye to Your Varicose and Spider Veins with Sclerotherapy Treatment

One of the best procedures that you can get to address your varicose and spider vein concerns is sclerotherapy. With this time of treatment, you’ll be able to see improvement within the first few weeks of recovery, and for larger varicose veins, you’ll see visual improvement in a few months.

It’s best to speak to your doctor to see if this is the best option for you and how severe your condition is to know how many sessions you’ll need.
